Life Story for John Lewis Monten
John Lewis Monten, 71, of Crompond, died on August 11, 2017. Born in Queens on September 10, 1945, he was the son of the late John W. Monten and of Henrietta (Kellermann) Monten. John worked for more than four decades as a science teacher at Rye Neck High School and then Peekskill High School, as well as teaching education courses at Pace University and Manhattan College. While an undergraduate at Adelphi University, John was selected as an All-American Swimmer. He remained an active athlete in the following decades, participating in numerous triathlons and New York City Marathons, as well as coaching the track and cross-country teams of Rye Neck High School. Throughout his life, John shared numerous pastimes with his family and friends, including beekeeping, raising animals, gardening, mountain climbing, camping, kayaking, playing the trombone with the Northern Westchester Symphony Orchestra, the bass with the Nostalgia Jazz Quartet and the ukulele with No Soap. He collaborated in organizing the Hudson River Clearwater Festival, the Mohegan Colony Association and MCA Storytelling Festival. He was an avid traveler and savored trips with his family to Mexico, Turkey, Spain, Morocco and Brazil. John is survived by his devoted mother, Henrietta, his loving wife, Ellen, sons: Michael Cohen and partner, Nancy Barton, Jonathan Monten and wife, Manda Wilson, Joshua Monten and his husband, Martin Lehmann, and his grandson Abraham. Friends and family will gather to honor John’s life at the Fourth Unitarian Society of Westchester; 1698 Strawberry Road, Mohegan Lake, NY, on Sunday, August 20th from 2:00 to 4:30 PM.
